CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD

JANICE JOHNSON

Janice Johnson has had extensive experience in multiple fields of criminalistics to include fingerprint identification, crime scene investigation, and bloodstain pattern analysis.  Jan’s career initially started with 10 years of experience in ten-print identification with the FBI.  She then went to work for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), becoming a Senior Crime Laboratory Analyst throughout the state for the next 22 years.  At the beginning of her career with FDLE she developed a love for the science of bloodstain pattern analysis and became one of the less than a handful of analysts certified by the State of Florida in both crime scene analysis and bloodstain pattern analysis.  Jan has testified in hundreds of criminal cases in both of these specialties.  Jan is also certified by the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst as well as being on the founding Crime Scene Certification Board.  Jan believes in commitment to the science of forensics and as such is extremely active in promoting certification within the IAI.  Jan had previously served on the Board of Directors for numerous years and has risen through the ranks of the organization. Jan is currently retired from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in Pensacola Florida.

 

PRESIDENT

Gary brannen

Gary has been a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Florida since 1978. He has served with the Florida Department of Corrections, Wildwood Police Department, Eustis Police Department, Umatilla Police Department, Tavares Police Department and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office since 1990. Gary currently holds the rank of Captain and commands the Criminal Investigations and Forensic Services Division. Gary is the Latent Print Examiner for the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, however that agency provides forensic services for all of the local, state and federal agencies in the county. Gary has an Associate in Science degree in Criminal Justice from Lake-Sumter Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from Saint Leo University. He is a certified law enforcement instructor by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and an Adjunct Instructor in the Withlacoochee Technical Institute Law Enforcement Academy. He is also an Adjunct Instructor at Lake-Sumter Community College in the Criminal Justice Program. He has been a member of both the FDIAI and IAI since 1999. Gary was certified as a Crime Scene Technician by the IAI in 2000.

KOREN COLBERT

Koren received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology from Florida State University 1984. She has been employed by the Bay County Sheriffs Office since 1991 as a Deputy Sheriff She was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division November of 1992. Koren was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on January 1, 1998 as Supervisor of the Bay County Sheriffs Office Crime Laboratory and Crime Scene Investigations. She has been a member of FDIAI since 1996 and is a FDLE certified instructor

erica lawton-mcwhite

Erica Lawton-McWhite is currently employed by the Broward Sheriff's Office in their Crime Laboratory as a Firearms and Toolmark Examiner.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a emphasis in Criminalistics from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2002.  During her last 6 months attending school, she was fortunate enough to have an internship with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation where she spent the majority of her time in the Firearms and Tool mark section of the lab.  On completion of her internship she received an Award of Excellence from the Director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for her service there as an intern.  Erica has taught at both the FDIAI and the Association of Firearms and Tool mark Examiners conferences and participates in training at the Metropolitan Police Institute.  She also serves on the Shoe Print and Tire Track Evidence committee.

King is currently the Crime Scene Supervisor for the West Palm Beach Police Department and is the Chairman of the Forensic Photography Certification Board for the Florida Division of the IAI. King has been in the field of Forensic Science for 21 years. He holds a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and a Graduate Teaching Certificate from Florida International University and is a Senior Certified Crime Scene Analyst, Certified Latent Print Examiner and Certified Forensic Photographer with the IAI. Mr. Brown has been an instructor for the past 10 years, teaching at IPTM—Orlando, The Taylor Group, Benchmark Professional Seminars and the North Alabama Law Enforcement Training Center teaching Crime Scene Photography, Basic & Advanced Crime Scene Search & Recovery and Advanced Latent Fingerprints. Mr. Brown is also an Adjunct Professor at Palm Beach Community College, Crime Scene Technology Associates Degree Program. King has been a lecturer at the IAI Training Conferences since 1998.

melissa riley adams

 

Melissa graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology in December of 2004.  She also received her certification in Underwater Crime Scene Investigation through Florida State University in April of 2005.  She began her career as an intern with the Bay County Sheriff’s Department under the tutelage of Sgt. Koren Colbert and was then employed by Washington County Sheriff’s Department as Crime Scene Investigator, Evidence Custodian, and Underwater Crime Scene Investigator in January of 2005.  Recently she has completed her Law Enforcement Certification and is now a certified Law Enforcement Officer.

CHRISTINA BARBER

CHRISTINA BARBER – is currently employed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as a Crime Laboratory Analyst assigned to the Latent Print Section.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida.  Ms. Barber has been working in the field of fingerprint identification for over ten years and is currently certified as a latent print examiner by the International Association for Identification.

HARIA HAUGHT

Haria Haught is currently employed by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office as the Manager of their Biometric Identification Unit. She has a Bachelor in Arts degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Forensics from Saint Leo University in Florida.  She also holds a Crime Scene degree from Saint Petersburg College in Florida.  Haria is an Adjunct Instructor with Saint Petersburg College instructing Fingerprint Classification.  Prior to her position at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, she was employed with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office as a Fingerprint Technician.  Haria has taught the Science and History of fingerprints at Saint Leo University as well as the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC). In addition, Haria is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Forensic Science also through Saint Leo University..

JOEL SMITH

Joel H. Smith, has served in law enforcement as a civilian investigator for approximately eight years with a previous background in agricultural science and religion. He is married with two daughters and currently supervises the Crime Scene Investigation & Identification Section of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

NATALIE BORGAN

In December of 1996, Natalie graduated from Arizona State University in BS in Justice Studies and a minor in the Japanese Language.  While she was an undergraduate student, she was an intern with the FBI / Phoenix Field Office. In November of 1999, she was hired and employed with the Coral Gables Police Department as a Crime Scene Technician.  In January of 2000, she completed her work and received a MS in Forensic Science with a Concentration in Advanced Investigation from University of New Haven (Sacramento Campus), in addition to a Professional Certificate in Forensic Computer Investigation.  As a gradate student, she completed an internship with the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, working as an autopsy assistant.  While working as a Crime Scene Technician, she has received numerous awards, such as “The Hero Award” December 2004/The Jr. Orange Bowl Committee; “Civilian Police Department Employee of the Year” December 2004/Faternal Order of Police Lodge #7; “The 9th annual Green Family Foundation American Values Award” August 2004/ United Way of Miami-Dade; “Employee Excellence Service Award” April 2004/ Coral Gables Police Department; and “Employee of the Month” July 2002/City of Coral Gables.  She is also a member of the IAI, FDIAI, and Associate Member with the AAFS.

M. FRANK SHONBERGER

Frank was employed with the City of Miami from 1967 to 1999.  During his employment with the City of Miami Police Department he had progressed through the Identification Technician job family.  Beginning as an Identification Technician I, then being promoted to Shift Supervisor, He was promoted in 1984 to Criminal Identification Unit Supervisor.  He managed the operation of the functions of this Unit: Prisoner Processing, Photographic Laboratory, Video Studio, Latent Print, Automated Fingerprint Identification System and Crime Scene Investigation   In January 1999, Frank retired to undertake the challenge of establishing a New Crime Scene Investigation Unit for the City of Coral Gables Police Department and currently works for that agency.

Igor pacheco

Igor received his bachelors of science degree in Biology in 1998 from Texas Tech University. He moved to Miami Florida in 2001 to attend Florida International University's Forensic Science Certificate Program.  While attending FIU, Igor was hired in 2002 at the Miami-Dade Police Department Crime Scene Investigations Bureau Fingerprint Identification Section as a Fingerprint Analyst I in their MasterFile Unit.  He finished his certificate program in Forensic Science at FIU in 2003 having taken post graduate classes in analytical chemistry, molecular biology, forensic chemistry, and forensic biology.  He is now been employed as a fingerprint analyst for two years (at the end of 2004).  Recently, he has been transferred laterally to the AFIS unit within the CSI Bureau's Fingerprint ID Section as a Fingerprint Analyst I AFIS administrator.  In addition, he also has one year experience as editor of the South Florida Forensic Association newsletter

Historian

paula bolivar

Paula graduated from the University of Virginia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Latin-American Studies.  Thereafter, she taught high school biology at American Senior High School in Hialeah, Florida and was later employed by the Miami-Dade Police Department as a Fingerprint Analyst I in June 2006.  Paula has provided presentations on the History of Fingerprints at the FDIAI Educational Conference, Advanced Ten-Print Class in 2006 and 2007.  She has also presented at the Metropolitan Police Institute in Doral, Florida and the National School of Technology in Kendall, Florida.  She devised and authored the MDPD Fingerprint Analyst I Training Program and is currently working on her Master of Science in Forensic Science from Florida International University with emphasis on Biology and Chemistry

DANNY FORMOSA

In 1979 after receiving an Associates of Art degree from Miami Dade Community College, he started his career with the Homestead Police Department. In 1980 he was assigned to the Identification Unit. It was then that he started his training in the Crime Scene and Fingerprint Identification. In 1983, he became a member of the FDIAI and after years of intense training and attending several FBI courses, he testified as an expert in the Latent field. In 1987 he received his Bachelors of Science degree from Barry University. In 1993 he was promoted to Sergeant where he supervised the Identification Section. In 2003, he retired from the Homestead Police Department and is currently working as a Crime Scene Investigator with the Coral Gables Police Department.
