Florida Supplies 1,000,000th DNA Profile to National Database

June 25, 2002

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported the Florida Department of Law Enforcement contributed the one millionth DNA profile to the National DNA Index System (NDIS) on June 12, 2002. This milestone highlights the growing cooperation between local, state and federal government. The FBI administers the NDIS, which has expanded in its four years to include 130 federal, state, and local laboratory participants.

FDLE has been involved in the design of the FBI CODIS system since 1991 when Florida was invited to participate in the pilot program, which included 14 state and local laboratories. Florida was the first state to provide samples to the NDIS in 1998, and has contributed more convicted offender profiles to the NDIS than any other single state. Profiles from Florida total 125,000, representing 12.5% of the profiles housed in the national database.

The aggressive work of Florida’s DNA Database, as well as, Local Crime Laboratories has aided more investigations using the NDIS than any of the 42 participating states. To date, Florida has aided 890 investigations through the searchable profiles contained in the NDIS. The DNA Database has had 604 hits or matches, 55 of these were with other states.

The FDLE DNA Database has been helping agents and local agencies fight crime since 1990. Any criminal justice agency in Florida is able to access the information, and searches of FDLE’s DNA Database currently assist in 50 to 60 investigations each month.
