Position

This class performs scientific analysis and meticulous work related to the investigation of evidence for the detection, documentation, preservation, and comparison of latent prints, footwear, and other trace evidence; provides expert testimony in local and federal courts; conducts training seminars.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs scientific evaluation for the presence and preservation of latent prints, footwear impressions, and trace evidence.
  • Employs various computer programs, alternate light sources, microscopes, magnifiers, processing techniques, etc. to enhance evidentiary value of items.
  • Compares unknown fingerprints, palm prints, footprints, and shoe impressions to known samples to determine if they are from a common source.
  • Scans and encodes latent print minutia into the State and Federal Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and verifies results.
  • Provides results of analysis to law enforcement officers, attorneys, courts, correctional facilities, civil proceedings, and victims of identity theft.
  • Prepares and maintains official reports, case logs, statistics, etc. for use by local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Assures quality controlled work environment under the standards and guidelines of the American Society of Crime Lab Directors (ASCLD) and Scientific Working Group for Latent Prints and Footwear (SWGFST/SWGTREAD).
  • Provides expert testimony in depositions and court proceedings and conducts training seminars to law enforcement and private citizen groups.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminalistics, Forensic Science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience in latent finger/palm print examination, comparison, identification, and development with a recognized law enforcement agency, which must have included court room testimony; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job as those listed above. Experience with ACE-V methodology is a must.

License and Certification Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Certified Latent Print Examiner with the International Association for Identification or acceptable equivalent

Knowledge of (position requirements at entry)

  • Applicable equipment and tools utilized in the science.

  • Criminal justice system.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes.
  • Basic criminal forensics.
  • Laboratoy safety procedures and guidelines.

  • Using a computer and related AFIS/IAFIS, photography, and other software applications.
  • Providing customer service.
  • Monitoring and maintaining evidence integrity.
  • Preparing and maintaining reports, logs, records, and files.
  • Using applicable processing tools and electronic equipment in the science.
  • Maintaining legal chain of custody.
  • Safeguarding evidence.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, courts, the general public, etc. to explain detailed processes and procedures, to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Supplemental Information

Positions in this class typically require:

  • Ability to work in a normal office and forensic laboratory environment.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, blood and other bodily fluids, extreme temperatures, inadequate and/or extreme lighting, and work space restrictions.
